Learn more about your boat, how to sail it and tactics. Racing is a great way to improve your skills and get more from your sailing by competing against other similar boats in a friendly and supportive environment.
We have one primary racing event each year, the annual Sonata Regatta. We also encourage members to participate in other events, sometimes in conjunction with an organised SYA cruise.
Sonata Regatta
The annual Sonata Regatta is hosted by Geelong Trailable Yacht Club (GTYC) at St. Helens (North Geelong).
The Regatta is open to any Trailable yacht owned by a current SYA member. The race format comprises ’round the buoys’ racing on Saturday with a sternchaser race on Sunday.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience and learn more about racing. It is a fun weekend for all with the emphasis on good sailing and good socialising.
Unfortunately the 2025 Regatta scheduled for 22/23 February was cancelled due to the weather forecast. It will not be re-run as planned due to the low number of entrants available on the proposed date.

Victorian Trailable Yacht Division
The VTYD organise a traveller series which includes the annual Victorian Trailable Yacht & Sports Boat State Titles. Any Sonata owners interested in racing against other trailable yachts are strongly encouraged to look at attending these events.
The 2024/2025 Victorian Trailable Yacht and Sports Boat State Titles are to be hosted by the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club. The date is 15-16 February 2025. The intention is to create an inclusive, mixed fleet event. There is also the re-introduction of a non-spinnaker division to cater for all types of trailable sailors. The venue is superb, and has been timed so people can capture both this event and the Marlay Point Overnight Race two weeks later.

Marlay Point Overnight Race
The Marlay Point Overnight Race has been running on the Gippsland Lakes since 1969. It is the only overnight race for trailer sailors in Australia and has earned a reputation as the Sydney-Hobart for smaller yachts.
Previously hosted by the Lake Wellington Yacht Club (LWYC), this iconic race that runs on the Victorian Labour Day Weekend in March every year is now hosted by Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) under the guidance of LWYC. Starting at sunset, competitors sail across Lake Wellington, through the McLennan Straits into Lake Victoria for the run home to Paynesville.
Regarded as Australia’s premier race for trailable yachts and multi-hulls, about 4000 boats and 11,000 sailors have been involved over the past 50 years, making the Overnight Race a must-do on every trailer sailors bucket list.
